Halloween Parties

Halloween time brings amazing Halloween parties. A good Halloween party will keep guests talking until next year. What makes up a good Halloween party?
1. Food
2. Drink
3. Guests
4. Music
5. Fun
6. Good Costumes
7. Events/Contests.

Everyone wants some good food and drinks at the Halloween party. Having some scary looking and yummy food it a wonderful way to spruce up the night. Pumpkin can be turned into items like this pumpkin cookies.

How to make pumpkin cookies.

Decorations will also help to bring the party alive. The decorations will help to get all the guests in the same fun Halloween mood. Below is a link to an article on tips to help liven up a Halloween party which includes some good decoration ideas.

Tips to Liven up a Halloween party.

Guests and fun are linked together some. You need people who are ready for Halloween fun. Be careful not to invited too little or too many. Too few and there may not be enough people for the fun Halloween games. Too many and the party is just crowded.

Fun can be dancing, games, scavenger hunt, scary movies. Contest and Events can be fun too. A Costume contest can be a wonderful way to get guest to really dress up for Halloween and show off some creative skills. For a really creative bunch you can even make the best homemade costumes.

I think the best part of a Halloween party is all the fun I get to have decorating and then seeing all the different costumes. A little bit of planning and the Halloween party will be hit.

Halloween 2013: Making Costumes

When I was a children living in Michigan and upper Ohio, many of the Halloween were a little cold
so the costumes we wore also had a nice layer of dark clothing under the costumes to keep us warm. Now living in the south I have to remember not to put that much clothing on the kids or they will roast as we Trick or Treat. My son this year is planning on being a killer. With an old pair of pants and a white shirt both splattered with spray blood. He has a sword that blood drips down the blade. It will be a simple costume, yet affective. Hopefully we can convince him to do something with his hair and maybe a scary face. A good costume can come from old leftover clothes. For example a Lost Pirate:

• Lost Pirate

Take some old clothes that are a little too small. No worries, we are going to make the clothes comfortable to wear by ripping the parts that are unaffordable. Those clothes are what the pirate was wearing when he was lost; he had ripped them as he grew. If you are in a climate that is cold you will want big enough clothes to go over coat or undergarments. The end of the pants and shirt sleeves will need to be ripped, ratted, and dirty. You can make them look dirty by using black and gray spray Halloween paint or simple walk on them in the garden, providing there is an empty spot without plants. With a dirty face by spreading some brown makeup on and an eye patch. Put some black makeup under your eye to give you a tired look. You can add a sword or even a broken sword to this costume.

• Vampires

Vampires are a popular costume. They can be dark and scary or light and pretty or a mix of both. Boys can use old dress clothes or suits. Girls can use old fancy dresses. If you’re going for the pretty look you need nothing more than makeup and teeth. For a dark look rip up the bottom of the clothes. Girls may want to wear a layer underneath and rip the dress on top a lot. This will allow the dress to flow but the second layer will provide warmth and coverage. Pop in some vampire teeth and a little whitish makeup and you’re set to be a Vampire.

Looking at some of the newer costumes for Halloween, there are many adult costumes. Great for adult parties, but not so great for Trick or Treating with the kids. All costumes here I will try to keep PG13, if you have a new costume you would like to share with us… please post a link in your comments below. I will delete any adult costumes, so please keep it clean.

Healthy Halloween Treats

There is lots of talk about Candy being bad. Too much of anything is bad. I remember a local doctor
who would give out apples at one door and his wife gave out caramel at the other door. I didn’t mind the apples. Thinking back it would have been good to gather up the apples and make since nice baked apples. Could have even melted the caramel to go on top, but I’m getting off subject now. There is some Candy that is better than other and there are some other snack items that can be given out in place of candy like listed below:

Twirlers, my husband’s favorite, are a fat free candy.
Lemon Heads are fat free and about 10 pieces is about 50 Calories.
Pretzels are good but salty snack.
Nuts can be a good protein snack, but some people are allergic to them.
Juice boxes or flavored water bottles, kids get thirty as they Trick or Treat.

These are all good alternatives to just candy. If you are concerned about all the candy and would like to try another route by all means go ahead. Just need to think outside of the box for some yummy and healthier options.

Baking Pumpkin Seeds

I love to make homemade pumpkin seeds. My recipe uses an entire container of salt. I soak the pumpkin seeds in salt water for a few days, then lots of salt to bake the seeds in. Now I love that salty pumpkin seed but I’m also checking out other pumpkin recipes to consider making some adjustment to my recipe.

My recipe can be view at:
How to Make Pumpkin Seeds

I’m interested to hear what recipes the readers use. Please share ideas in the comments. I also welcome any suggestions to my recipe.

Deadly Snowmen

I've been sitting here think about snow all ready. We have moved from
Ohio to Tennessee, where we are not going to see snow like we had up
north unless we go into the mountain tops. I was remembering the last
time we made snowmen with the children. Hopefully I can go through the pictures soon and show you the snowmen. Since I don't have the picture now, I can at least tell you about the snowmen and the bad drawing on the left by me too.

We made two snowmen. The first snowman held with two sticks as arms, and toy sword. The second snowman was in front of the first snowman, except his head was on the ground. Then we used red Kool-Aid to color the snow. My children and husband was very proud of their killer snowmen.
Thankfully the neighbors got a kick out of the snowmen too.

This memory leads me to a good craft idea for the Halloween Party Foods:

*Killer Snowmen on a Pretzel*

Gather these Items:
Popped Pop Corn
Caramel
Large pretzel
Red Food Coloring
Grease Cooking Pot
Licorice
New Small Paint brush

Cut the Licorice into stick shapes, eye, noise and mouths.

Melt 3/4th of the caramel in a well grease cooking pot.

Drizzle some caramel over the popped popcorn and roll into three
different size balls. Assembly the popcorn balls like the snowmen;
large, medium, and small. Except every other snowman leave the head off
to the side.

Drip a dot of caramel on the pretzel where you want the snowman parts
and people to go.

While the popcorn snowman is still sticky; attach the licorice pieces to
the snowman.

Melt the remaining 1/4th of the caramel. Add red food coloring to the
melted caramel to give it a red tint.

With the small paint brush, brush the red tinted caramel on the snowman
without the head.

Don't forget about you as well, there is Halloween costume contests coming up. Remember last years winner and their over the top look? With a little planning you can have a great costume and win this years contest. What do we need to be looking for. Below are some ideas to make old items great Halloween costumes.

Black Dress - An old black dress can be cut down to fit on children. The cuts will be great jagged as they will look more scary.

Tie - Old ties make a great snake. Witches can wear a snake tie as a belt or around their neck.

Colorful Big clothes - This clothes are great for a clown costume.

There are many good Halloween costumes that come out of old clothing. Start by choosing what you what to be and then let your imagination run wild.

133 Day to Halloween 2011

Yes, I'm crazy and thinking about Halloween already. (really I'm crazy I already started my Chirstmas shopping too!)

But, there one good reason to think early. It Saves Money. Thinking in advance gives you plenty of time to come up with a Halloween idea and find the best and cheapest way to make it happen.

If my kids want a good witch out fit, pretending I don't have the items I hand, I can go garage sale shopping or ask around of old worn out black clothing. (the black clothing works for more than half of the costumes)

Want to make something extra specail. No problem pull out that sewing machine and get working. With all the extra time, you'll be able to make a great costumes that is bound to win a few prizes.

Halloween is going to be even more exciting this year. We finally got other kids to move into our part of the block...should be extra fun.

If you got something Halloween to share, send me a comment and we'll get it posted.

This unquie costume is great for using old clothes hidden into the closet. I love this idea because there is usually some old clothes hiding in the children closet. We can recycle those old clothes into a new and wonderful Halloween costume.

Pictures of Halloween 2010

Halloween 2010 was a lot of fun. My oldest son used a mask from an Alien costume and a black robe to make his costume. We cut the bottom of the robe so it wouldn't drag. He used the bottom of the robe to cover his arms and black glove to cover his hands. Not bad for his first time being creative and putting together his own costume.

The Younger son (the much shorter one lol) mixed two costumes together. He used a zombie bottom with a skeleton head. Easy and cute all at the same time.

The Second Picture here is my favorite as he has those red eyes staring at you. Really just that red eye effect from the flash that we normal don't want. But this worked great for the Halloween picture.
My husband, Richard, as Mario and his friend Jim, as Luigi. Both bought from the store, but just goes to show that you are never too old o have fun with Halloween. It just depends what you do with the Halloween season.
Last, my husband, again, and me. Sorry for the dark photo, but not bad for my son taking it. I had to tone down my normal witch costume because of the young kids we were going with. Instead I opted for this more fun purple witch. Try as I might nothing suits me better for Halloween then a witches costume. Put together from items I got from Walmart. Interesting looking hat with feather, black cape, a black shawl (helped to keep me warm too) and purple hair. I got the black cape from our Halloween box however.
We got the Halloween stuff all neatly packed away for next years use and plenty of candy left over as well.

Halloween Costume made from Leftovers

Halloween is approaching fast. This year seems to go by so quickly; I'm still trying to catch up to it. Five Days until Halloween day and only two days away from the first Halloween party for my family. This year we haven't bought anything for Halloween yet; as like many of us we are trying to save as much money as possible. Tonight we pulled down that old Halloween box to see what was inside.

To have a really great Halloween box without spending a lot of money it is best to buy Halloween items just after Halloween. Yes, you miss that years Halloween. You also save tons of money and end up with really cool items for future Halloweens. Another cheap way is to keep some old ragged clothes around as well. Like black pants that got bleach spilled on them. The pants can either become hard at work pants or save for Halloween. Of course your Halloween box can become over full. That when you can share with neighbors or weed out old stuff that most likely won't be missed.

Inside our Halloween box was a little bare this year with new item. However our oldest son has fun mixing and matching items. He took an old black robe that was adult size. We cut jagged all around the bottom of the robe and arms of the robe to make it fit him. He then took an Alien mask and put it on with black gloves left over from winter. He used the two arm selves cuts to wrap around his wrist to hide his skin. The cut from the bottom of his robe is warn like a scarf to hide his neck. It became a really good costume from some old junk.

I'm planning to get some good pictures on Halloween from him. So if your low on funds or just want to save money; look no further then the junk in your own home or even a local thrift store.

Easy Indoor Halloween Decorations

Author: The Halloween Host

I always like to start with a Halloween theme for my Halloween decorations. Ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, etc… then build from that point.

In a ghost theme, you can create ghosts from sheets and pin them up on walls or have them hang from different elevations in your home. Such as railings, doorways, lamps, cabinets etc. are inventive.
Ghouls and skeletons are pretty much the same concept except they can be placed in a chair or a bathroom or place it on a wall right where people might be coming in.

Pumpkins are my favorite theme. You can carve many different designs out of a pumpkin even if you aren't very artistic.  There are stencils for carving pumpkins such as pet faces, silly faces, scary faces, or even inanimate objects such as tomb stones. How about a carving of a pumpkin?

I always thought it would be cool to have a pumpkin carving contest. The guests can bring their own pumpkin and you decide if it should be carved at your house or if it should already be carved when they arrive. I like the latter idea because of the mess they make.  If you do decide you want it done at your house just insist they clean the pumpkin before they arrive. This will cut down on the mess. Put garbage containers near every two people and have a time limit. You can judge by categories or just overall whose was the best.  And then the pumpkins become part of your décor.

Be sure to use plenty of spider webs so your house looks creepy. Spiders are great also. If you have a basement and use it as your party room place spiders lining the walls going down the stairs with a large spider up above.

In the bathroom if you really want to scare someone squirt fake blood all over the tub walls and shower curtain then close the curtains part way. Then you can put some fake body parts in the tub.  And don't forget the sound effects.

Halloween can be as much fun for decorations as Christmas. So have a ghoulish good time.

Halloween Spirit

Halloween can be a fun time of the year if you participate. More and more people think Halloween is losing it magic or Halloween spirit because the old door to door tick or treating is disappearing. In Sevierville, TN there is very little door to door tick or treating instead the kids go down to various local functions. The churches, community center, and even the local baseball stadium give the children as chance to get candy. The churches do more of a trunk or treat where the people from the church pass out candy from the trunk of their cars. The towns do this to keep our children safe, as door to door has become increasing more dangerous. So how do we continue to have Halloween spirit, fun, and excitement?

Volunteer at some of the local events. Do you have really neat Halloween decorations, like to scare people, or just have some time to help pass out candy? Volunteering to help out with a local event or some of the local events is a great way to have fun with Halloween and share the fun with everyone in the neighborhood. It is also a great way to meet new people in the town as well. Never know, mingling at Halloween events may even help your personal career!

Churches, community centers, or the local chamber of commerce will be able to help lead you to the right direction of local events going on for Halloween and who to get in contact with to volunteer your services. Not only is this helpful to spread the Halloween spirit with everyone in your neighborhood but it also help to make Halloween twice as much fun for any children you may know, including the big kids as well.

Halloween parties are still a SCREAM. Children and Adults can enjoy a Halloween party. With all the old Halloween games and maybe a haunted house, a Halloween party with all your family and friends is a great way to spread the Halloween spirit. This is a perfect way to share your Halloween craftiness by showing off your Halloween foods, decorations, and imaginations. Maybe even a nice cauldron over a fire with some good soup would be a great way to feed the ground and be spooky. Many people even collect can food in exchange for the soup. Great way to help out the local food pantries for needed people.

Decorate your front lawn. Just because people don’t door to door tick or treat much anymore doesn’t mean that you can’t decorate your front lawn. Now with a little bit of planning the Halloween decoration can easily be reused for Thanksgiving decorations as well.

Scarecrows can be dressed spooky for Halloween, but turned into happy scarecrows for Thanksgiving.

Painted pumpkins can have two faces; one side of the pumpkin spooky for Halloween and the other side cute or turkey face for Thanksgiving.

Noose hanging from a tree can look spooky especially with a vampire or witch or funny for Thanksgiving with a turkey.

There can still be Halloween spirit with or without door to door tick or treating. We can still have fun and keep the children safe. If you are friends with many of your neighbors, or live on a safe street and want to get to know your neighbors, you can always have a Halloween block party. This would allow the children to have fun, but keep them in a safe area.

Last but not least you could create your own haunted house. This can be done in your backyard, garage, or even a basement. Have fun scaring some family and friends. After checking with local laws you could even charge a small donation to donate to a charity. Halloween fun for the neighbors while helping a local charity; best of two worlds.
